Why Commercial Dog Food is Non Okay
The thing is, German Shepherd is one of those breeds which are very prone to diseases. You need to buy a high quality dog food to keep your German Shepherd healthy.
This doest mean your dog will barf after eating the cheap food, but it greatly incleases the risk of your dog catching a disease and dying too soon even because of overall weakness. In this case, your best option is to make cheap food yourself.
What Do German Shepherds Even Prefer?
Proteins, fruits and vegetables. Proteins are #1 priority in dog’s nutrition. Poultry, meat(muscle and organ, like liver), and fish are the main sources of protein, as we know it. From that, the most digestable protein we can get from chicken and turkey, and a few kinds of fish. There are also plenty of digestible proteins in beans (sometimes even more than i several kinds of meat and fish). You can feed your dog with raw or cooked meat, but latter is more preferable.
German Shepherds like vegetables and fruit, especially leafy greens. You can also feed them with carrots, cooked sweet potatoes, and some anti-oxiant berries are always welcome. Cooked vegetables are more digestable, but German Shephers are also okay with fresh and frozen beans and other vegetables, so you can use them as a treat.
Several Important Advices
Do not give German Shepherds tomatoes, avocado, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts and chocolate, because they are toxic and dangerous to them.
It should be said that rice is exceptionaly good ingredient for German Shepherd nutrition. You can also cook rice-only dishes when your dog get digestion problems.
Also, it is recommended to give multi-vitamins in addition to daily healthy nutrition(consult your veterenarian before applying anything).
Food Recipes for German Shepherds
Now let’s go on to some good recipes.
The recipe for daily nutrition for German Shepherd, recommended by one Animal Scientist of University of Illinois:
- 4 cups of rice;
- 1 cup of brown rice;
- 1 cup of barley;
- 2 lbs of frozen vegetables (I use a mix with potatoes, carrots, celery);
- 3 Tbsp olive oil;
- 2 Tbsp minced garlic;
- 300g chicken livers (or 5 livers);
- 0.5 kg ground beef or ground turkey;
- 10 cups of water or stock (I use organic chicken stock, no msg. The container has 4 cups and so I add 6 cups of water).
Cook on low for 6 hrs. A 20 kg dog should be eating 1200-1500 cal/day depending on the activity, which results in 1.5-2 cups of such food daily(be sure to split the day meal, so the dog eats 2 times a day or more).

Meal for German Shepherds with Digestive Issues
This meal is ideal for GSs that have a weak digestive system:
Cook the rice and potato separately. Boil the chicken in a separate pot and cut into little pieces. Mix all the ingredients together.
